Probably having known more about Chinese humor wouldn't have helped make it any funnier to me--I don't think "To get to the other side" is a great punch line in English. I don't know anything about Japanese stand-up...the only thing I've ever read about it was Dave Barry's description of audiences that refused to laugh, which I've never quite believed.
